All artists are story tellers, whether it is a story about a dog barking at the moon, told by Miró or a story about discovering what lies around the corner, told by Paul Critchley. Some stories are direct and amusing, others more subtle and subdued, some may be bright and cheerful whilst others anxious and disturbing. The best story tellers are those who delight and inspire, who inform and provoke the viewer to participate and reflect.

Gallery Terraferma is pleased to invite you to this exhibition of paintings by Paul Critchley, familiar stories told with the very distinctive voice of this English artist.

Paul Critchley was born in Rainford in 1960 into a family of artists. By the time he was 25 he had moved to Berlin and the adventure of being an artist had begun. Due to his interest in perspective and its distortions some of his early paintings, made whilst at art college, had been on irregular shapes, now in Berlin he was free to develop his ideas further. The subject of his paintings changes depending on where he is. He has already lived in a number of European countries and is always looking for new ideas; windows, paintings for ceilings, corners. The latter present the viewer not just with a painted illusion, but also constructed space; sculptural paintings. There are two types in this exhibition; one which folds itself into a corner and one which wraps itself around the corner; one has to walk around the painting to discover what is there.

The artist has recently moved his studio again, this time from Altea to Barcelona and so has started a new era. The first paintings of which will also be in this exhibition.
